Coalescence and Blackout go on show at the Sainsbury Centre

Coalescence and Blackout will be exhibited at the Sainsbury Centre in Norfolk from 15 October 2023 - 30 March 2024.

The works will form part of the exhibition Sediment Spirit: Towards the Activation of Art in the Anthropocene, curated by the Sainsbury Centre’s Curator of Art and Climate Change John Kenneth Paranada. The show brings together interactive artworks from 1960s to present today considering human-made climate change.

Both Coalescence and Blackout are made from anthracite, a high-carbon and lustrous coal, which we excavated from one of the UK’s last remaining coal mines. This ancient material, formed underground over million of years, has had huge impact not only on the environment in the UK, but on communities and the economy.

The works are about finding a way into those complex conversations through a point of wonder and beauty.

“I want to engage with the public in a way that is thought-provoking, prompting bigger questions around energy consumption, the history of fossil fuels, and the need to reach net zero.” - Paul Cocksedge.

“Paul's work is such a powerful success story in captivating the public's imagination in the face of the world’s greatest challenges. Encouraging such meaningful engagement with new audiences is the main ambition of the Sainsbury Centre. That is why we are so thankful to wonderful artists like Paul who help us intrigue, inform and inspire visitors to our wonderful museum.” - Jago Cooper, Executive Director, Sainsbury Centre
