20 Trees blends mathematics with environmental awareness.

Using anthracite blocks, the sculpture subtly conveys a message about ecological balance: if burned, it would take 20 trees a whole year to offset the carbon emissions produced.

The carbon pollution released into our atmosphere by our hand can be remarkably and invisibly absorbed by trees in a cyclical process, but we have created an imbalance.

20 Trees is derived from this delicate balancing equation that governs the natural world. It draws focus to a precious and complex resource that is rarely seen, yet responsible for fueling so much of daily life.

Up close, the material has a gravitas and permanence at odds with its disposability. The inky black, high-carbon coal has a richly textured surface that serves as a reminder that it is hewn from the earth, and a lustrous quality that gives a sense of the material’s embodied energy.

The work stands as a gentle reminder of the critical balance between human actions and environmental stability, encouraging us to contemplate our relationship with the natural world.
